KYW Medical Report: The COVID-19 vaccine's impact on children

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The availability of the COVID-19 vaccine is a tremendous relief for many parents, but it has also had an emotional impact on children.

It is a common statement in the world of pediatrics: Children are not just little adults. Many of the treatments we use to help adults avoid or fight illness can be quite different when it comes to children.

This is why the FDA and CDC took so much time to develop and approve COVID-19 vaccines for children.

Certainly, it was not easy to hold back approval as testing was going on because there was a race against time — not just for anxious parents but to reduce the amount of spread among those not vaccinated.

Many children, especially those old enough to understand the implications of not being vaccinated, are now comforted by the knowledge that they also can get the vaccine to not only help themselves but reduce spread to those they love.
