PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — When we classify types of exercise, we group them by mild, moderate intensity, and vigorous. However, really any exercise is good, and you do not have to travel far to burn calories.
When we think of exercise, our minds turn to competitive sports or visits to the health club, but you'd be surprised how much exercise can be done around the house.
Chores like mopping or vacuuming floors, sweeping the patio, or pushing a lawnmower are all considered moderate-intensity exercise and are just as good as walking at a brisk pace. Coming back from the store and carrying the groceries up steps is considered vigorous.
When you push it even further, activities like shoveling dirt or snow can be stressful enough that it is recommended that you check it out in advance with your physician if you are over 40.
The one common denominator is activity — your body does not factor in location when calories are being burned and heart rate goes up.
