PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A popular Philly baker is opening his first official store this weekend.
Alex Bois, founder of Lost Bread Co., went from working in a kitchen space to running his bakery out of the kitchen of Craft Hall. Now, he has his own brick-and-mortar spot to call his own.
“Lost Bread Co. gets a store,” he enthused, “and now we make bagels.”
The Rittenhouse Square shop, located at 23rd and Walnut streets, will also offer items to go along with the bagels, like Lancaster-based fresh, homemade cream cheese and locally sourced lox.
“We’re doing classic sandwiches like egg and cheese,” he said. “We’re also doing delicious scrapple in-house from local pork.”
Early in the pandemic, Food & Wine magazine named Lost Bread Co. one of the top bakeries in the country.
“Considering we don’t actually have a storefront, (it) is a pretty happy accomplishment for us,” said Bois.
Of course, now they have one. Bois said they’ll also sell some grocery items and, obviously, bread. Pandemic-related shortages have forced his staff to get creative with the kinds of breads they bake.
“If you have this pallet to choose from of all different grains all milled differently and so on, there are some common threads, but it makes for something really exciting,” he added. “Every couple months, we focus on a different grain and we actually produce a grain-zine that’s available for free on our website.”
