PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The man who pleaded guilty to raping a woman in LOVE Park in 2020 will spend 13 to 40 years in prison.
Judge Charles Ehrlich handed down 27-year-old Quindell Campbell's sentence in Common Pleas Court at a hearing on Wednesday.
Assistant District Attorney Asheeka Desai told the court the victim was on her way to work early one morning in January of 2020, when Campbell followed her through LOVE Park, punched her in the face and then violently raped her as she screamed.
The 45-year-old victim told the judge through loud sobs that the incident has changed her life forever and she doesn't feel safe anymore. "Don't let this happen to anyone else," she said.
The defendant's family told the judge that Campbell is "not a monster but a good guy that made a bad decision."
However, prosecutors said it was a calculated attack. Phone records show he watched rape porn before the incident. And he evaded arrest for days.
"He inquired about how to change his name and how to erase his fingerprints and continued in the following days to try to evade law enforcement by cutting off his signature dreadlocks." Desai said.
Watching rape videos and then acting it out in the middle of a public square was concerning, said the judge. Ehrlich sentenced Campbell to 13-40 years in prison followed by three years of mandatory probation.
"If you are a survivor, a family member or a community member, we are here to help you, to be a safe and confidential way for support," said Laquisha Anthony of Women Organized Against Rape.
