COATESVILLE, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — The Chester County District Attorney's Office said a man is facing charges for attempted murder and other related offenses after he allegedly stabbed a police officer in Coatesville. That officer is home now and recovering from his injuries.
20-year-old Michael White of Manheim, Pennsylvania was arrested Friday afternoon for allegedly stabbing Officer William Cahill at a convenience store on West Kings Highway.
According to the district attorney's office, Cahill and his partner were responding to a theft when the suspect, an employee at the store, stabbed him multiple times to the back of the head and his face.
It happened during a meeting in the management office inside the Turkey Hill mini mart. Investigators said White was confronted by a store manager for stealing $200 from the register. During the meeting, they said White admitted to stealing $3,000 over a few months.
White told Cahill he would return the money he stole, which he said was in his safe at his home. That's when police said the suspect attacked the officer — right after he shook Cahill's hand and was allowed to leave.
White was immediately arrested and is being held without bond at Chester County Prison. His next hearing is set for September.
Cahill, a 35-year veteran on the force, is recovering at his home.
Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said this "was a harsh reality check of just how scary and dangerous the job of law enforcement is."
