PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 21-year-old man will spend up to four decades behind bars after pleading guilty to third-degree murder in the ambush shooting of a Philadelphia teenager two years ago.

Ranief Allen was sentenced to 10 to 40 years in prison. He admitted to being one of two men who gunned down 16-year-old Nafis Betrand-Hill on a North Philadelphia street corner in April 2023.

At the time, police said Betrand-Hill was outside with a group of kids and adults at 23rd Street and Montgomery Avenue when two suspects jumped out of a car and began shooting.

He was struck several times and died at the hospital.

Another defendant, Zaakir McClendon, is scheduled to go to trial in May. McClendon is also one of the suspected shooters in the Roxborough High School football field shooting that left a 14-year-old dead in 2022.
