PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man is in critical condition after he was shot on a basketball court in East Mount Airy.

It happened around 10:30 Thursday night at Pleasant Playground, near Pleasant Street and Chew Avenue.

According to police, about 10 people were playing basketball when someone walked up the steps to the court and started shooting.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said a 22-year-old man in the middle of the court was hit by bullets. He was shot in the head and backside.

"We did find a basketball on the court, and that's where we found a large amount of blood," he said.

When police arrived, Small said the man's friends were carrying him to their car. Officers put him in the cop car and took him to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.

Police also found bullet holes in a car that belongs to the victim's family member who was at the basketball court.

No arrests have been made. Police do not know the motive for the shooting.
