Medical Report: Common biking aches and pains

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Bike riding is a great form of exercise, but it can cause some annoying health side effects.

Certain precautions — like wearing a helmet and bright-colored clothes with reflectors for bike rides during dusk and dawn — are essential, but there are other issues you must consider.

For instance, handlebar palsy, with numbness and tingling in the hands, can be caused by keeping your hands bent up for lengthy periods of time. For cyclists, it can become a chronic problem.

Another issue is numbness in the perineum. A nerve called the pudendal nerve, which supplies the pelvic area, can be compressed by a narrow seat. Shifting weight can help, but this can be another issue on long bike rides.
