SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Unsanitary conditions have been contaminating the Mullica Township municipal building for years. Township officials on Tuesday unanimously voted to address the problem.
Water, mold and even raw sewage have been plaguing the basement of the building, which is where the police department was located.
Committee members have unanimously agreed to replace a septic tank and a seepage pit, and conduct soil and air studies. Part of the plan also includes finding a new, permanent home for the police department, which has been temporarily operating out of a courtroom.
Former Mayor Kristi Hanselmann said the conditions are unacceptable.
“Unfortunately, this occurred. But fortunately, hopefully the silver lining of it will be that now our police officers will have a place that they deserve,” she told NBC10.
For years, officers have complained about the conditions in the basement. Some even recorded videos of sewage leaking through the walls.
Another township meeting is scheduled for Sept. 7, where more information is expected to be shared, including reports on soil and air quality tests.
