SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — No longer will you have to fumble through your glove compartment to search for your New Jersey vehicle registration card. Police will now accept a digital copy if you get pulled over.
Gov. Phil Murphy signed a new law this week permitting registration on a phone or another device.
One of the bill’s co-sponsors, Assemblyman Bill Moen, said New Jersey is just one of a few states doing this.
“We all know how frustrating that can be — even nerve-racking, I would say — to have to dig through your glove box for that piece of paper with an officer waiting on you to find it,” he said.
“This law is going to help bring yet another aspect of New Jersey’s government and the operations of that government into the 21st century.”
The Motor Vehicle Commission will work on the official rules for this new initiative over the next 18 months or so, but the bottom line is right now, a picture of your registration on your phone is sufficient.
And, don’t worry about having to show anything else on your phone. Police would need a warrant to search for anything other than the registration. However, if privacy is a big concern, you may just want to keep that paper copy in a good place.
