PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you live in New Jersey and you're trying to apply for the state's new COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program, you'll have to wait. The program, unveiled just a few weeks ago, was quickly suspended.
New Jersey residents who've been financially impacted by the pandemic, and recently applied for the state program online, may have been surprised to learn they couldn't get through.
In an email to KYW Newsradio, Tom Hester, with the New Jersey Department of Human Services, said applications for the program have been put on hold while the department reviews the substantial amount it's received.
Under the program, launched on October 9, a person making less than $57,000 a year or a family of four earning less than $118,000 could get help to pay any overdue, and upcoming rent or mortgage payment from March through December of this year.

Applications for the $12 million program were being accepted through December 18, or until funding was exhausted, under the original plan.
It's unclear when the program will resume.
