SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey is considering replacing E-ZPass transponders with license plate stickers.

A few thousand New Jersey Turnpike Authority vehicles are currently running a pilot test of the stickers to see if they would work as a suitable replacement for the E-ZPass transponders.

Executive Director Kris Kolluri said saving money is one of the key benefits of making the switch.

“A transponder is very expensive to replace, and we have to do that once every 10 years,” he said. “It costs typically $6.54 a transponder versus $1.25 for a sticker, so the savings are big.”

Kolluri also said the stickers would be harder to steal because they would break if someone tried to peel them off.

“We think for security reasons, from a financial standpoint, and for customer convenience, a sticker may be the right way to go. But we want to try it out.”

He said they want to make sure the stickers perform well in all types of weather conditions before finalizing anything. A decision will be made later this year.
