PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Pennsylvania is sinking $30 million into improving access to the sports complex in South Philadelphia over the next few years.

Gov. Josh Shapiro announced the investment Thursday from Citizens Bank Park, saying the improvements will make it easier for sports fans to get to and from the complex and allow them to see the entire game in person without leaving early to avoid traffic.

“I don’t want Dad’s, fans, and others to have to make that decision about leaving a game early. It is important that we get this right,” said Shapiro.

The money will go toward a new entrance ramp to I-76 at 7th Street, as well as a new traffic operations center within the complex. Construction on a second turning lane to I-95 from Front Street has already been completed.

The plan also involves adding 19 traffic lights that use AI to recognize and mainstream traffic flow.

“Nothing was tuned up together, nothing was coordinated, and a big reason for some of the traffic as you were leaving or coming in is because those signals were off,” Shapiro said. “Use technology as an enhancement to move people along and get people to their destination more quickly.”

Phillies owner John Middleton said ingress and egress is the most significant challenge facing the sports complex.

“Materially improving traffic flow, transportation infrastructure, and overall accessibility is essential to the continued success, growth, and long-term future of the lower south region,” he said.

Construction is planned to be completed by the end of 2028.
