PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the first time in nearly 200 years, the Philadelphia Flower Show will take place outdoors because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society said it will be moving the 2021 show from inside the Pennsylvania Convention Center to FDR Park in South Philadelphia, from June 5 to 13, 2021.

Ahead of the announcement, Mayor Jim Kenney told KYW Newsradio he thinks moving the event outdoors would be a good idea.

"I know about the plan to move it there. We are supportive of it. I don't have all the details yet as to where everything will be situated, but it's a lovely place to have it and we'll hope for good weather," Kenney said.

"We are thrilled to be able to celebrate the outdoors and offer joy and beauty after a year that has been marked by so many challenges," said Sam Lemheney, PHS chief of shows and events.

Attendees are required to reserve a specific date and time to limit crowd sizes and keep with social distancing guidelines.

Tickets go on sale in January.
