Penn State Thon raises record-breaking $13.7M for pediatric cancer research, support

Students resumed dance marathon in person for its 50th year

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Penn State’s 50th annual Dance Marathon resumed its fundraiser in person this year to raise money for pediatric cancer research and family support.

Hundreds of student dancers gave it their all for the 46-hour marathon inside the Bryce Jordan Center over the weekend. The event took place virtually last year because of the pandemic.

This year, they raised a record-breaking $13.7 million. The previous record was set in 2014 at more than $13.3 million.

Ed Schneider spoke during the fundraiser about his daughter, Makenzie, who died of cancer at the age of 3 in 2009.

“You make a difference,” he told the dancers. “I watched family after family walk across this stage. You don’t realize it, but I do. You guys make a huge impact on them, whether it’s financial or just through support. So understand that and what you are doing is so powerful.”
