UPDATE: More than 100 firefighters help put fire at PES oil refinery under control

UPDATE: 4:43 P.M.

Emergency Management officials say around 12:30 p.m., work crews sounded the alarm after residual crude oil was sparked in a tank. As a precaution, fire & hazmat crews were called to the scene for assistance, and around 2:30 p.m. the fire grew to two-alarms.

It was placed under control by the Philadelphia Fire Department at 4:27 p.m. Police confirm there were no injuries and no evacuations.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) —More than 100 firefighters were called to South Philadelphia to battle a two-alarm fire at the site of the former PES oil refinery.

At least 45 apparatus were sent to the scene to assist firefighters with the fire, which occurred inside a tank that's not in use, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department.

The refinery complex dates back to the Civil War, and has been the subject of a number of controversies, including a series of fires and explosions in June 2019, one of which was felt by people throughout the area.
