PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A child welfare caseworker has turned herself in to Philadelphia police to face charges in connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl in July.

Police say Jendayi Mawusi, 25, is charged with third-degree murder in the death of Hope Jones, who was in the care of the Department of Human Services when she was killed.

The child’s foster mother, Kiana Casey, was previously charged with murder in the case.

Police were called to Casey’s house on July 12 and found the child unconscious. She was pronounced dead a short time later at Children’s Hospital.

A law enforcement source said in July that an autopsy revealed multiple injuries to the child’s head and face and throughout her body, including damage to internal organs with rib fractures. According to the source, the child also had internal bleeding in virtually every part of her body.

The death was ruled a homicide. Casey was charged two weeks later.

Law enforcement sources say Mawusi, the case worker, had made a home visit to check on Jones and left her in Casey’s care, less than an hour before police were called.

Mawusi was employed by Northeast Treatment Centers, one of the agencies DHS contracts with to manage child welfare cases.

DHS said it’s prohibited by state law from discussing details of the case.
