Why Year of the Tiger means more in 2022 for Chinatown's Lunar New Year

Philadelphia's celebration lasts throughout February

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Asian communities across Philadelphia are celebrating the Lunar New Year this week, taking time for family, food, and traditions on what is considered an extra special holiday this year.

2022 marks the Year of the Tiger, symbolizing courage and determination.

Devon Stahl of the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation said the tiger is fitting for this Lunar New Year, as recent times have been rife with challenges for AAPI communities.

"It really signifies determination and courage, which I think is something we could all use going into the year, especially recovering from the ongoing pandemic," said Stahl.

"I think there's something to be said for being able to proudly practice your cultural traditions perfectly within this context of anti-Asian hate. And it's also a great opportunity for us to welcome people who might not be familiar with New Year's celebrations."

With Philadelphia's rich and diverse Asian population, she said there are plenty of celebrations. They welcome people to join them and learn about their cultures and traditions.

"The great part about Lunar New Year is reunion," said Stahl. "It's an overall theme, and includes not just family, but also friends. So we really encourage people to join in with us."

The events include some on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Rail Park.

"Some of our community partners will be hosting an outdoor very safely near activities and events very famous family friendly. And they'll actually be a lion dance performed by the Philadelphia sense," said Stahl.
