Philadelphia police introduce new diversity chief

Temple grad Leslie Marant is first person to hold department's new position

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Police Department announced the newest member of its executive team this week, in a history-making new position.

At a press conference, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw introduced Leslie Marant as the department's new Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion officer. She said the lifelong Philadelphian is "uniquely qualified to serve" in the historic position.

"I'm happy to assume this position," Marant said, adding the commissioner personally advocated for its creation.

The office was established to oversee diversity and inclusion efforts throughout the department.

According to Marant, that involves "developing a strategic plan that builds in accountability, that assesses our current metrics, sets goals and allows us to track performance to plan."

All of this, she said, will allow flexibility to pivot, "when we find that the data or the information or the assessments that we incorporate over time demonstrate to us that we need to ... re-evaluate and reassess."

Marant is a Temple University graduate with over 20 years of service as a staff attorney for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Marant is just the latest woman making history at the Philadelphia Police Department. Learn more about its trailblazing commissioner on Bridging Philly.
