PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia nonprofit has created a special youth art show, where dozens of kids can win big before their work is even judged.

Taller Puertorriqueño is a nonprofit dedicated to art and culture in Philadelphia’s Latinx community. Associate Director Erikka Goslin said their Youth Art Show is letting them reach kids in a special way.

“Youth come after school to do different arts and culture activities, focused really on Latinx art and culture, specifically Puerto Rican-focused,” said Goslin.

Goslin added their Youth Art Show is letting them reach kids in a special way.

“We’re lucky enough to receive a donation of a bunch of laptops, and we’ve been thinking of a way to engage our youth and a way to really get these laptops into the hands of our community,” said Goslin.

Nancy Rodriguez with Taller Puertorriqueño said they’re giving those 50 laptops, and free memberships to the organization, to the first 50 kids who signed up for their art competition to help them complete their projects.

“I also wanted to create an equal opportunity for all the children in the neighborhood to participate,” said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez added that the competition, for kids from 4 to 18 years old, has three different age groups. It gives participants a chance to explore Latinx culture through different themes.

“We will be using their art in an exhibition that will be portrayed at Taller,” said Rodriguez.

“(Young) kids are tasked to create a drawing of an animal in their environment. The second group is to make an art piece envisioning them in the future. The third is for older children, and they are tasked to create an art piece that incorporates their own values and the values of a Latinx artist.”

The submission process wrapped up on Wednesday, Taller Puertorriqueño said on its Facebook page, It was originally scheduled to end on November 21.

A ceremony to honor all of the competitors will take place in early December.
