PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The City of Philadelphia is looking to take a bite out of urban water pollution, and their campaign is going to the dogs.
A spokesdog competition is being used as a fun way to combat pollution, and they're featuring adoptable dogs from Philly shelters.
The newest spokesdog will help city residents understand how important it is to scoop the poop.
Not doing that correctly leads to dog poop washing into storm drains and local waterways, including the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers.
"People don't often realize, but it's a real source of pollution," said the Philadelphia Water Department's Brian Rademaekers. "It has nutrients in it that can cause environmental problems like algae blooms."
He said the pathogens from it can make dogs and people sick if they're around it.
The campaign is making its return after being put on pause last year. It's a way to promote pet adoption and awareness, especially for new pet owners.
"We'll work with whoever adopts that dog, hopefully to work out an education campaign and do fun stuff," he adds.
"Sort of a duel pet ways education campaign and a pet adoption campaign. The adoption community in Philadelphia is so compassionate, and it's also a target audience for us. A lot of people adopting dogs are new dog owners, and they don't know the rules around pet waste disposal.”
Several dogs from three city shelters have been chosen for your online vote. You have until May 26 to pick your favorite, and you can adopt them as well.
The winning pooch will be fitted with a special blue cape.
