PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — March is Women's History Month and the Philadelphia Police Department is looking for more women to join the force.

According to Recruitment Sgt. Robert Ryan, women make up about 22-23% of the city's police force.

"As women come to the force, they bring different skill sets that are very good to policing," he said, adding that those skills become invaluable as the search for more women gets into high gear.

Ryan acknowledged that women sometimes bring a different approach to policing than male officers.

This recruitment drive is especially significant. "As we celebrate our first female commissioner," he asked, "what better way to get the word out for Women's History Month?"

Women working in the field of public service will share their experiences on Saturday, in a Zoom conference moderated by Commissioner Danielle Outlaw.

"Women can do the job and lead in all organizations," said Ryan. "That goes for different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, different religions, (and the) LGBTQ community as well.”

Recruitment ends on March 31. More information can be found on the department's recruitment site.
