PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — High school senior Edward Scarborough has been busy this year. He applied to 43 colleges across the country — and was accepted to all of them.

He has also amassed more than $900,000 combined in scholarship offers.

The student at Mastery Charter School Lenfest Campus said his 4.17 GPA helped him stand out. He and other high school seniors all over the U.S. shared their upcoming college plans on National Decision Day earlier this week.

Scarborough, of North Philadelphia, is turning down 42 acceptances — including from Penn State and Howard University — to attend Clark Atlanta University in Georgia this fall.

“It was just exciting to me knowing that not really too many people like me can say that they are doing this,” he said. “They gotta go down a different route — be in the streets, be in a mess. I just feel like it’s different that I could say I’m making something of myself.”

He has always wanted to attend a historically black institution (HBCU). The 18-year-old, who lost his father to gun violence at age 6, said his mother is his inspiration.

“Not too many young people want to listen to their mom. They want to catch an attitude. They think she just talking, but just everything she said, look where it got me,” he said. “[Growing up], I saw my mom busting her behind. I’m just determined to make sure I got her.”

On National Decision Day, students often announce their college choice by sharing creative photos and videos on social media. Scarborough’s approach was simple: his senior picture, surrounded by the logos of the 43 colleges that accepted him.

“I manifested having so many colleges over my face on decision day,” he said. “I manifested that, and it came true.”
