ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating an engine fire on a plane that was set to fly out of Atlantic City International Airport.
Officials said a bird struck a plane's engine on the tarmac just before 6 p.m. Saturday, causing the engine to catch fire. That Spirit Airlines flight was scheduled to depart for Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida.
The airline said in a statement, "The captain braked safely and brought the plane to a stop, received an indication of damage to the engine, and ordered an evacuation in accordance with our standard procedures."
All passengers were safely taken back to the terminal, after sliding down the emergency exit chute. The flight was consequently cancelled.
Spirit said they would issue full refunds and future travel vouchers to all passengers on the plane.
