PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For drivers who have faced years of construction delays along busy Route 422 in the Valley Forge area, the end is near.
Anyone who’s driven the stretch of highway between Route 363 at Trooper Road and Route 23 at Valley Forge Road knows the commute has been nothing short of a daily challenge for more nearly four years.
Lane changes, bridge reconstruction projects over the Schuylkill River, and ramp pavings and reconfigurations have all been part of the routine for Route 422 drivers.
This week, however, crews are putting the finishing touches on work, including line painting and pavement markings, before getting out of the way.
PennDOT spokesperson Brad Rudolph said it wasn’t just the highway that needed attention.
“There’s been several bridges that we’ve reconstructed and widened to improve travel in that corridor in the Valley Forge area,” he said. “And, we’re excited to be done with bridges and open things up for motorists to have three lanes in each direction with the new auxiliary lane connecting Route 23 and Route 363.”
More than 90,000 cars use this route to cross the Schuylkill River each day, Rudolph said, the majority either entering or exiting at the 363 and 23 interchanges.
He said the improvements should help alleviate the congestion and make for a safer ride.
