PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A gun went off inside the popular Fashion District mall in Center City Tuesday evening.

Around 6:30 p.m., police said a nearby officer heard a gunshot.

Investigators do not believe anyone was directly shot, but some shrapnel from the bullet may have swiped at least one person.

Responding officers took a young man — possibly a teenager — into custody.

“The individual that was the gunman may have fired the gun,” said Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace. “It looks like at the time the gun was fired, that the magazine somehow fell out of the gun and the shooter was unable to fire the weapon any further because there was no source of ammunition.”

The Fashion District was placed on lockdown and then closed for the remainder of the night.

Police are unsure if anyone else was involved. They are actively investigating.
