PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Many vendors at the Southeast Asian Market in FDR Park are starting from scratch after Saturday’s storm caused excessive damage throughout South Philadelphia.

Melissa Ngar said it looked like a bomb hit the outdoor market. She did what she could to save her stand, Melissa Khmer BBQ, from taking on damage when strong winds and extremely heavy rain rolled through the region.

Meteorologists said the storms were a series of microbursts, with straight-line winds between 60 and 70 mph.

“One of my neighbor tents like flew up,” Ngar said. “I was trying to hold her tent down so it don’t fly to my part of the stand where my children are running around, playing.”

Other tents and tables broke, and ingredients were lost by nearly everyone.

Rebounding will be difficult, said Sirey Pov with Stir Fry Lady. “It’s gonna be hard to get back for a lot of people, because some of these people, this is what supports them.”

Donations are being accepted via the Southeast Asian Market’s website to help vendors recover.

Some food stands will be open for the market this weekend.
