DELAWARE COUNTY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A Delaware County community celebrated St. Patrick’s Day early with a tradition more than 100 years old.

The Springfield St Patrick’s Day Parade celebrated its 105th year, despite a chilly, dreary afternoon, the community turned out in large numbers. Neighbors sat on their lawns and parade watchers lined the streets as floats, dancers and community members marched to Irish music.

Lisa Smith, who has fond memories of attending the parade every year with her family, recalled a special moment from last year.

“Last year, my granddaughter was three at the time, the parade was backed up. And the little dancers from the Irish school were in front of us, and these two little girls showed my granddaughter how to do Irish dancing. It’s that kind of a thing — everybody’s happy,” said Smith.

More than 1,000 people watched the parade outside of businesses along Saxer Ave.

Down the street, students from Saint Francis of Assisi raised money to help their school rebuild after a devastating fire last year.

Erin Caramanico, a representative of the school, described it as a wonderful opportunity for the community to show their support.

“Our eighth graders are hosting a snack bar out front of the church,” said Caramanico.

“And all that money will help with their eighth-grade fundraising costs, but also we’ll be giving a lot to the parish to help rebuild.”
