CAMDEN (KYW Newsradio) — Kids in Camden are getting a chance to catch up on missed classroom time they did not get during the school year.

The Camden City School District is doing this through a special summer program called Summer Boost, designed to help kids erase the COVID-19 slide.

Angel Leal, a rising eighth grader at the Catto School in Camden, has reflected the journey of many other kids who have spent a majority of his school year at home, behind a computer.

"It's harder at home. You don't get to be taught as much as in school. I also think it's harder when you're alone," Leal said. He will take part in Summer Boost.

"I want to learn more while also having fun with others. I don't want to just be bored while learning. I want to also have a lot of fun."

The four week in-person program is for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. It will help reacclimate many of them with full time in-person learning, through credit recovery and bridge courses.

The administration believes these things are key for kids who missed some critical time in the classroom over the school year.

"I think it's going to help me be ready for the next year and help set the ground work for eighth grade for me," said Leal.

The district says they'll continue to follow CDC COVID-19 guidelines at all of their sites.
