SUV slams into SEPTA El station, killing driver, 2 pedestrians

A third pedestrian was injured and taken to the hospital

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A horrific car crash left three people dead in Kensington early Tuesday morning. Police say a man driving an SUV hit and killed two people on the sidewalk as the car slammed into Allegheny Station along the Market-Frankford Line.

Police say the driver in a white Honda Pilot was speeding just before 3 a.m. A bystander named Will witnessed the crash.

“So I’m looking at this car speeding through the intersection and it just didn’t register what was happening,” he said. “He was going so fast, and literally just drove straight into the wall. There was a semi-type explosion.”

The car jumped the curb and plowed into the wall and turnstile of Allegheny Station, according to Chief Inspector Scott Small, igniting a small fire and leaving a large crack on the right side of the wall. Firefighters rushed over and put the flames out.

Police say the driver hit three people on the sidewalk. Two pedestrians, a man and a woman, were killed. The driver also died.

One other person, a 53-year-old man, was hit and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Officials say he is in stable but serious condition.

“It pulls on your emotion and as a human being,” added bystander Will. “You just try to process this the best you can. … There’s always people sitting there and they had no chance.”

“It could have been me sitting there or anybody during the day,” echoed another witness, Stephanie. “That’s a bus stop. People stand there to wait for the bus or come out for the train, and it gives me anxiety. It’s sad.”

SEPTA officials are surveying the scene but do not believe the building sustained any severe structural damage.
