PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It is important to do all we can to protect our vision. Wearing protective eyewear in risky work settings or in certain sports is one way to avoid problems.

Lifestyle changes are key to avoiding issues like cataracts or damage to the blood vessels in the eyes.

One of the biggest things you can do if you have diabetes is to control your blood sugar. Uncontrolled blood sugar is a major contributor to diabetic retinopathy, an eye condition that can cause vision loss and blindness.

High blood pressure also needs to be controlled. Another way to protect your eyes is to wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet light.

Finally, make sure you get your vision checked on a regular basis.
