So eager for live music since COVID-19 struck, hundreds watched an opera in the rain

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Hundreds of people, so eager for live music that they ignored Wednesday's rain, descended upon the Mann Center in Fairmount Park for a night at the opera.

It's one of the first public, in-person, live music events in Philadelphia since the pandemic began last March.

"I'm really excited," said Rigel Deming. "It's kind of the first time to experience some outdoor culture in the new normal that we live in."

Deming and his friend had driven about an hour to get to the Opera Philadelphia production "The Drama of Tosca," an adaptation of Puccini's tragic opera "Tosca."

"I don't know. It's my first opera I've ever seen, so it should be fun. It gives me something to do. I've been locked up for a year and a half."

Many attendees said they felt completely safe, especially since the venue is outdoors with required masks and social distancing.
