PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — According to a leaked draft budget proposal, the Trump administration is considering cutting funding for specialized crisis services for LGBTQ youth.

The proposal includes potential reductions to services under the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which currently offers LGBTQ-specific support.

The Attic Youth Center in Philadelphia has served as a haven for LGBTQ youth for more than 30 years. Jasper Liem, executive director of the center, explained that proposed cuts are creating yet another barrier for a disproportionately vulnerable group, which can cost lives.

“We are doubling down on caring for our youth. Right now, we know that 40% of LGBTQ youth have suicidal ideation, and 1 in 10 of us make some kind of attempt.”

While organizations like The Trevor Project and the Attic Youth Center offer support, Liem said the 988 hotline is a critical national resource.

“They’re not just statistics, they are people's children and siblings,” he said. “How do we ensure that we are providing support for all youth?”

The draft budget still needs to go through Congress and is not final. For now, the 988 crisis line remains available. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can call or text 988 to be connected with a trained counselor.
