NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A female driver was taken into custody after she hit six people with her car during a protest in Manhattan on Friday afternoon, the NYPD said.

Around 40 to 50 protesters were gathered at the intersection of East 39th Street and 3rd Avenue around 4:08 p.m. on Friday when the driver accelerated and hit the six people, police said.

She stayed at the scene after the incident and has been taken into custody, the NYPD said.

The alleged driver, 52-year-old Kathleen Casillo, was charged with reckless endangerment and issued a desk appearance ticket.

All six people who were hit suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

The NYPD initially said the event was a Black Lives Matter protest, but an organizer told NY1 demonstrators were marching in support of ICE detainees at the Bergen County Jail in New Jersey.

Police have asked drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area due to road closures.

An investigation is ongoing.
