The Padres lost to the Phillies 3-0 on Monday in a game that will ultimately be remembered for the Padres' inability to drive runners in when they were in scoring position. Griffin Canning pitched well, allowing just a solo home run to Kyle Schwarber through the first six innings, before running into trouble in the 7th inning, where he allowed a two-run home run to Brandon Marsh. But having Griffin Canning pitch into the 7th inning is something the Padres will take every time he takes the mound. It was San Diego's offense that led to frustration on Monday. They loaded the bases with no outs for the heart of the order in the bottom of the 1st inning, but Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill each struck out, before Nick Castellanos grounded out to end the threat. Machado had another opportunity in the 3rd inning with runners on the corners and one out, but grounded into an inning-ending double play. In the bottom of the 5th inning still trailing 1-0, the Padres had runners on 1st and 2nd with one out for Miguel Andujar, but he popped out to 1st base. Xander Bogaerts then flew out to left field to leave two more runners stranded. All in all, the Padres went 0-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 8 baserunners. Randy Vasquez will face Aaron Nola on Tuesday.
