Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is continuing to offer reimbursement for funeral costs to those who lost loves ones due to COVID-19.
But with the financial assistance comes scammers, the agency warns.
FEMA is alerting the public that some scammers are reaching out to people and offering to register them for funeral assistance. FEMA has not sent any such notifications, and the agency does not contact people before they register for assistance.
Nationally, more than $270 million has been awarded over the past couple of months to approximately 41,000 applicants of FEMA’s COVID-19 Funeral Assistance program. On average, the federal government awards $6,756 per applicant.
About 2,200 individuals in Pennsylvania were reimbursed for eligible funeral costs, as well as more than 1,800 in New Jersey and roughly 100 in Delaware.
To register for funeral assistance, visit fema.gov. FEMA can not duplicate benefits that were already distributed from insurances, voluntary agencies, government agencies or other sources.
