Coming up with a last-minute costume is truly one of the most frightening things about Halloween.
Panic mode can really set in once you realize even Amazon won't be able to deliver that ubiquitous "Joker" costume in time.
But fear not, there are still a few easy and affordable ways to pull off a DIY outfit in time to hit your co-worker's costume party or just to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.
Here are six ways to pull off a the perfect Halloween costume.
Google it.
Getty ImagesThe answer could really be at your fingertips. Crafting expert Alexa Westerfield says all you need to find the perfect ensemble is put in the right keywords. "In today's technological age, whipping together a costume from things laying around the house can be done in five minutes with some quick and savvy searching skills," she told NBC. Input "easy costume ideas from your closet" and voila! You're done!
Thrift and hardware stores are your friend.
Getty ImagesSecond-hand stores can be a treasure trove for finding that perfect '70s or '80s retro look perfect for recreating characters on current modern hits like "Stranger Things," "Glow," or "American Horror Story: 1984." Items like spray paint can be purchased at hardware stores to repurpose old shoes or coats into the perfect ruby red slippers or "Thriller" jacket.
Sew what?
Getty ImagesYou don't need to be "Project Runway" contestant to tailor your ideal costume. Instead, pick up an inexpensive hot glue gun and glue along the seams you would normally stitch together. Remember: it doesn't have to look perfect, just good enough to last past the witching hour.
Dead...but make it fashion.
Getty ImagesLast year's "Where's Waldo" costume is this year's zombie "Where's Waldo" costume. Go ahead rip, cut, dirty up and throw fake blood on your striped shirt. Remember, you're purposely trying to show that he's had a really rough life, because he's dead. Genius!
Keep it classic.
Getty ImagesThere's nothing wrong with going as a cowboy/cowgirl, witch, pirate or ghost. Chances are, you probably already have items in your closet to pull off most of these looks. You won't win any awards, but at least you made a modicum of effort. Besides, you can always be "Maleficent" next year. Yeah, right!
Halloween is for the dogs.
Getty ImagesWhen you can't think of anything, let man's best friend come to the rescue. There's nothing cuter (for humans) than seeing a puppy in a costume. Cut a t-shirt or bed sheet and sew/glue gun a Superman or Wonder Woman logo onto it and you're done. Fido saves the day again.
