Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - There were demonstrations all across the country this past Saturday for what organizers called “No Kings Day.”

In Richmond, several thousand turned out at the State Capitol to protest the Trump administration, ICE deportation raids, LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, and more.

“We are to stand in solidarity with the communities being attacked by ICE. Both here and in L.A., our brothers and sisters in L.A.,” a speaker told the crowd.

Protesters held signs, chanted calls for justice, and later marched from Capitol Square to Kanawha Plaza

Governor Youngkin warned Friday that while he supports the right to peacefully protest, there would be zero tolerance for violence.

“I fully support our First Amendment and its protection of the right to demonstrate,” Youngkin stated. “But I want to be really clear, crystal clear, that there will be zero tolerance for any violence, for any destruction of personal property business property, for disrupting traffic and putting people’s lives in danger. If you violate the law, you’re going to be arrested.”

The event in Richmond remained peaceful. However, a Culpeper man faces charges after allegedly driving his SUV into a crowd of protesters following a “No Kings” rally in Culpeper.

Police arrested 21-year-old Joseph Checklick Jr. after they say he "intentionally accelerated" into people walking across a parking lot along James Madison Highway as the protest was ending. At least one person was hit by the vehicle, but no injuries were reported.
