HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610)- The Astros avoided an arbitration showdown with Carlos Correa agreed to an $11.7 million contract for the 2021 season.
The two sides were close to $3 million apart when they exchanged offers last month, which made a hearing appear likely but the two sides settled after the Astros initially offered $9.75 million while Correa asked for $12.5 million.
"Going through the arbitration process is necessary sometimes and it's there for a reason," Astros general manager James Click said in a statement. "But we're all glad to have it behind us so we can focus on our top priority, which is getting out there to compete for a championship with Carlos and the rest of the team."
Correa batted .264 with 5 home runs and 25 RBI last season, but he hit 6 homers during the Astros 13 game playoff run, including a walk-off in game five of the ALCS. The 26-year old is set to become a free agent after the 2021 season, but he has made it clear he would like to remain with the Astros long term.
