Travelers flying out of Atlanta this week may want to plan ahead. Long security lines at the airport, extreme pollen levels across Metro Atlanta and a hometown celebration for an Olympic champion are among the stories people across the region are talking about Monday morning.
Passengers heading to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport are being urged to pack their patience as spring break travel ramps up. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens confirmed that federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will be deployed at the airport starting Monday to help with line management and crowd control. Officials say the agents will assist with passenger flow and security operations during a period of heavy travel. On Sunday, some travelers were warned waits could reach up to five hours. One passenger reportedly suffered a panic attack while standing in line and required medical attention. Airport officials continue to encourage travelers to arrive early for flights this week.
Meanwhile, allergy sufferers across Metro Atlanta are feeling the effects of spring. A visible haze of pollen has settled across parts of North Georgia, and Sunday’s pollen count reached the “extreme” category. Doctors say the high pollen levels can trigger symptoms including itchy eyes, coughing and sneezing. Health experts recommend keeping windows closed, limiting outdoor exposure when possible and showering or changing clothes after spending time outside to avoid bringing pollen indoors.
In Douglasville, the city is celebrating a historic hometown hero. Olympic bobsledder Elana Myers Taylor returned home to a community celebration after adding another gold medal to her career achievements. The victory makes Myers Taylor the most decorated Black woman in the history of the Winter Olympics. She attended the celebration with her sons, Niko and Noah, as residents gathered to honor her accomplishments. Community leaders say her success continues to inspire young athletes and girls throughout the region.
