While Hugh Grant was largely CGI for his performance as an Oompa Loompa in “Wonka,” the character’s fancy footwork was all his own.
“I did do it, yes,” he told EW about a little jig that can be seen in the upcoming movie’s trailer.
“No animator could dance that angrily,” the movie’s director Paul King told the publication. “It’s the angriest dancing in film history.”
“Wonka” tells the early part of the Willy Wonka tale, with Timothée Chalamet starring as the titular character. Grant, as an Oompa Loompa, stars as an 18-inch-high character who has a small flute that precedes his dance parts in the movie. The actor’s face being one of the few non-animated parts of his performance.
“The bit that’s my face is frankly mediocre,” he joked.
Director King went on to explain how Grant went through a process that was him wearing a helmet with many small cameras attached to record his face while performing.
“There’s this computer nerd sitting off to the side of the room,” he jokingly said about creating CGI tiny Grant.
"Wonka" hits theaters Dec. 15.
