AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Less than one day after U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett said he'd seek re-election in 2022 in a newly created District 37, Austin City Council member Greg Casar has announced he's considering a run for the District 35 seat.

In an email to supporters Tuesday morning, Casar said he's forming an exploratory committee to consider running for the seat, which includes much of East Austin and Travis County east of Interstate 35, south along the interstate through Hays and Comal Counties, and into a large portion of San Antonio and Bexar County.

Casar is in the midst of his third term representing District 4 on the City Council, with a term set to end in January 2025. Prior to his election to the council, he previously worked as a policy director for the Workers Defense Project.

"We can win better jobs, a clean planet, and an end to the Republicans’ discriminatory laws," said Casar in a statement. "We can make the world a better place if we fight for it. If we organize for it. That’s why I’m considering running for Congress — to fight for working class and everyday Texans."

Listed among the members of his exploratory committee are Austin Mayor Steve Adler, Mayor Pro-Tem Natasha Harper-Madison, and fellow Council members Vanessa Fuentes, Sabino Renteria, Ann Kitchen, and Paige Ellis; Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza; and Travis County Attorney Delia Garza, in addition to a number of area community leaders and labor union representatives.

The filing deadline for the 2022 election cycle is Dec. 13. If Casar decides to run and officially announces his candidacy, he'll automatically resign his Council seat under the Texas Constitution.
