AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- The Democratic primary for Texas governor has drawn another candidate ahead of Monday's filing deadline.

Former public radio journalist Joy Diaz announced her run for the state's top seat Wednesday, setting up another challenger to Democratic front-runner Beto O'Rourke.

"I recently left journalism to fulfill a mission - an unshakeable dream, a fire in my soul - to serve you as the next governor of the great state of Texas," said Diaz in an online video announcing her campaign.

Diaz says her campaign will focus on three areas - the border, challenges to public education, and state preparedness.

In addition to Diaz and O'Rourke, the Democratic field includes Deirdre Gilbert, who runs a non-profit in the Houston area. On the Republican side, Gov. Greg Abbott will face off against two challengers - former state Sen. Don Huffines and former Texas GOP chairman Allen West.

A new Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday shows Abbott ahead of O'Rourke 52-37 in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup.
