Week 1 of High School Football is behind us! Last week, I went 8-4 in my picks. Let's take a look at each game and see where I was right and where I was wrong.
Byrnes at Spartanburg: I picked this game right, but my score was off. I thought it would be much more low scoring. However, the Byrnes offensive line & Mack Long proved me wrong as the Rebels totaled 411 yards rushing on Friday. Rebels won 41-14.
Boiling Springs at Gaffney: I picked Gaffney to win, and was right, but the Bulldogs played the Indians much tougher than I expected. Boiling Springs was tough and physical on the defensive side of the ball and QB Jaylen Dodd had a great night for the Bulldogs. The Indians prevailed 33-23.
Dorman at Riverside: This one was as expected. The Cavaliers absolutely rolled. The final score was 69-24.
Legion Academy at Chesnee: I picked this one right as I went with the Eagles at home. I picked Chesnee 28-14 and the Eagles won 27-16. Chesnee opened the season with a huge win and is now in the drivers seat of that region. I am very impressed with the Eagles win on Friday night.
Woodruff at Chapman: Here is where I was wrong, and way wrong. I picked Woodruff to win this game because of experience. Returning RB, returning several key starters, returning HC, but Chapman did not take that into consideration as they rolled the Wolverines 45-14. Welcome to Inman, Harry Cabaniss.
Greer at Greenville: Greg Porter has something special brewing at Greenville High School. I picked Greenville 42-30 over Greer and they won 34-17. Greenville has a ton of talent and this team will be playing late in the season.
Wade Hampton at JL Mann: I was also wrong here. I thought Wade Hampton would take down the Patriots, but I was off. JL Mann snuck past Wade Hampton by a score of 39-32.
Hillcrest at Mauldin: Hillcrest lost SO much from last season. There is NO way they will beat Mauldin. Well they did & I was wrong again. Hillcrest defeated Mauldin 24-14. Huge win for the Rams getting off to a good start in region play.
TL Hanna at Woodmont: I went with TL Hanna 30-14 in this game. They won 35-10. About what I expected in this contest and the Yellowjackets are the much more talented team. TL Hanna now sits at the top of their region.
Westside at Easley: Westside thumped Easley 45-0. I did pick Westside to win, but not by that much. I was also surprised that Easley was not able to find the endzone under new HC in Jordan Durrah, former Byrnes OC. Scott Early and the Rams are looking to be promising this season.
Southside Christian at Calhoun Falls was postponed.
Southside at Berea: I picked Southside in a 17-10 win over Berea. Southside did end up winning, but the score was 24-8. Southside has a very good football team this year and this was big win for the Tigers.
Eastside at Travelers Rest: Biggest bust of the week for me. I picked Eastside to win big, and they got thumped. TR won 25-3 and what a start for the Devil Dogs.
