Greenville Triumph named USL League One Champions

The Rob Brown Show, 12-3PM on ESPN Upstate

UPDATE: The Triumph have announced their championship celebration for the newly crowned League One Championship. The event will take place on Friday evening, at the same time that the team was set to originally play Union-Omaha. The championship will involve an inter-squad scrimmage in front of fans, followed by a ceremony involving the players and staff.

The event will be open to those who purchased tickets to the championship match, as Covid-19 protocols remain in place.

There are many things that describe the Greenville Triumph during this USL League One COVID impacted season: tenacious, tactical, disciplined, dedicated.

And now, you can add one more title to that list: champions.

It was announced on Thursday morning that due to a number of positive cases of Coronavirus amongst the Triumph's championship match opponents, Union-Omaha, that Friday's contest was cancelled, and the title would be awareded to Greenville by way of earning the most points per game during the regular season.

Before the season began, the league had decided to use that statistic to determine the league champions if a championship match wasn't able to be played due to the pandemic. After the positive tests and the cancellation, the league stuck with that decision, and awarded the Triumph the title.

While fans may be a bit disappointed to not be able to attend a championship match, there's no doubt that raising the league champions banner at Legacy-Early college to kick off the 2021 season will be a triumphant moment, and one the Upstate looks forward to.

We will update this story with more details, including any potential championship celebration, when they become available.
