County funding is now officially off the table for the proposed new stadium that would have housed the Greenville Triumph. The Greenville County Council discussed the matter again at their meeting Tuesday night. The proposal had failed to pass through the Council's finance committee a few weeks ago.
On Tuesday night, Councilman Lynn Ballard requested the suspension of a rule that renders a proposition dead if it fails to pass through committee. Ballard wanted a chance for the full council to vote on the new stadium. Vice Chairman of the council Dan Tripp represents the Mauldin area where the stadium was to be built and has been a proponent of the project.
Tripp for weeks has been referring to the finance committee as the "kill committee". He was one of the two finance committee members to vote in favor of the proposal. The request to revisit the matter failed to pass with a split vote of 6 to 6.
When the project was originally voted down by the finance committee Triumph management stated they are exploring other avenues to make the new stadium a reality.
