Former Washington quarterback Dwayne Haskins could soon be employed again in the NFL.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Haskins is scheduled to visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday.
Pittsburgh's quarterback situation is murky for the first time since 2004 as Ben Roethlisberger, who turns 39 in March, mulls his NFL future after 17 seasons. After clearing waivers following his release from Washington, Haskins falls in the low risk, high reward category now for potential suitors.
Once the 15th overall pick in 2019, Haskins is likely to be viewed as a reclamation project at this point, but one who, as Ron Rivera often refrained, has "an NFL arm." While his career didn't pan out in Washington, he has the foundational talent to hang around in the league. If he can only develop the fundamentals — and maturity — he was so bereft of while wearing burgundy and gold.
The league has proven many times over that it's always willing to give a second chance to someone who has the talent. If he can smooth out his other shortcomings, Haskins could once again call himself an NFL quarterback.
Often cruelly, the league will tell you exactly what you are. When he was released in December, Haskins quickly cleared waivers, sending a clear message he wasn't worth the risk carried by the $4.3 million price tag of his remaining salary. It would be easier to pick him up for pennies on the dollar in the offseason.
Haskins also had a visit with the Panthers earlier this month.
