Kyrie Irving had a bit of a self-imposed media blackout in training camp, which ended up costing him some coin, and he has remained careful about the things he says since.

However, Irving was quick to chime in on the NBA history made on Wednesday night, when Gregg Popovich was ejected from the Spurs’ loss to the Lakers in the first half and turned his duties over to assistant Becky Hammon, who in turn became the first female to act as head coach in an NBA game.

“Honestly, in the moment, I was just trying to win the game," Hammon said in her postgame media meeting. "I say this a lot, but I try not to think about the huge picture and the huge aspect of it, because it can get overwhelming."

Irving, however, was one of many to note and praise the gravitas of history.

“There shouldn’t be any roles that are deemed for male or female...But there’s still a fight. I am glad Pop got ejected and put Becky at the driver’s seat,” he said, according to ESPN’s Malika Andrews.
