Michigan might have had its starting center next season in redshirt freshman Zach Carpenter. It will have to look elsewhere.
Carpenter entered the transfer portal on Thursday, a surprising move after a season in which he climbed the team's depth chart.
He announced his decision via Twitter Thursday night, thanking Jim Harbaugh and the coaching staff and turning his focus to the future.
I want to thank coach Harbaugh, coach Warriner and the rest of the staff for giving me an opportunity to compete at the University of Michigan, as well as my team mates for pushing me every day. Now its time for a new opportunity. Looking forward to what the future holds! pic.twitter.com/Y19xdW6kgB

A three-star recruit in 2019, Carpenter spent last season on the scout team. He made his debut at center this season against Minnesota, then filled in for injured starter Andrew Vastardis against Rutgers.
With Vastardis set to graduate, Carpenter would have been first in line for the job next season.
