PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Steelers have made the first of their coaching hires. Filling the role of the retired James Daniel with Alfredo Roberts the new tight ends coach.
Roberts, 55, spent the last four years with the Los Angeles Chargers as first their running backs coach and then tight ends coach.
He played at the University Miami during the glory years under Jimmy Johnson, winning a pair of national championships. After being an eighth round pick of the Chiefs, he would play six years in the NFL in Kansas City and Dallas.
Roberts started coaching running backs at Florida Atlantic in 1999 and rolled that into a job with the Jags for four years as Jacksonville's tight ends coach. Then with the Browns, Bucs and Colts from 2007-15 also coaching tight ends.
After his last year with Indy, Roberts stayed in the area coaching offense for Carmel High School in Indiana for a season before the Chargers and head coach Anthony Lynn brought him back to the NFL to coach running backs in 2017. Roberts moved to tight ends this past season.
Steelers have a pair of coaching positions still open on offense-offensive line and offensive coordinator.
